My Fitness Philosophy

“Movement is a medicine for creating change in a persons, physical, emotional and mental states”- Carol Welch

Moving the body beyond its natural resting heart rate is no easy task. Physiologically there are so many biological processes that take place within the human body for a single movement to happen, it’s pretty amazing and nothing short of a miracle. Through physical movement, it is the oxygen, the breath of life that the body needs and requires to facilitate the delivery of energy throughout the meridians in the body; balancing, healing and progressing the body toward optimal growth and wellness.

As it pertains to health and wellness of the physical body, I hold a fundamental belief in developing and conditioning the mind before the body, as it is the mind that dictates the state and condition of the body. Typically in the arena of fitness much attention is paid to the body, the anatomy, the science based biological processes responsible for movement and not enough attention given to the psychological, cognitive process responsible our overall thought processes, which is the basis for all human action. In fitness nothing is achieved or sustainable without the proper measure of psychology required for physical action, in fact there is indeed a a certain mental preparedness that must take place to prepare the body for the consistent and successful progression of movement throughout life. This I hold as my most fundamental basis in working with individuals or groups engaging in fitness.

From personal experience and observation, I would say fitness can be pretty darn intimidating for many. And with life being busy with task, titles, demands, goals, expectations, our health is often neglected, as statistics will show. It takes commitment, courage, planning, a great deal of effort to just show up, let alone act. Like anything new, there is an array of thought and emotions that arise in this great undertaking. I’ve seen the ambiguity, the fear, the lack of confidence, anxiety, the doubt and sometimes shame in the faces of everyday people wanting to improve their physical health and most of all I’ve seen the struggle in incorporating a lasting routine and amongst life's challenges, this one deems to be the most challenging to conquer and sustain. The consistent reach for the better self, where you have to finally and actually self motivate and show up for yourself without the encouragement and perks we'd often get in life to reach for our best self. This I know can be daunting and sometimes a lonely journey, exposing fears, weakness, doubting your strength, challenging your will and confidence.

Like everything else in life, you have to start somewhere. Trust yourself and believe that this moment will lead you to many others, and it will, starting will be tough, but all you got is “ right here, right now “, so surrender to it! Just simply have faith and believe that at this starting point a huge window of opportunity will began to open itself to you, assisting in developing the fullness of who you are, who you want to be and where you want to go.

I remember when I began my fitness/movement journey and all the experiences that inspired it, I am grateful for them all.

In your start, in your middle and in all of your new beginnings, this is not so much about fitness, start out knowing that. It’s about life and you pushing forward, you cultivating a motivating spirit, and consistently cheering on your better self. With each stride, each push, each pull, each breath you come face to face with the stronger part of who you are and also the weaker part of who you are that wants and needs to be challenged, that wants to great, again, and again. Go for it! Do it for your future self, you’ve got to seize the moment.

 I’m rooting for you!
