Just a Girl From BK

From Frank Sinatra " New York", "New York",  to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys " Empire State of Mind", to the Beastie Boys “Hello Brooklyn” , to Bob Dylan "Talkin New York”, to Lil Kim "Lighters Up"; I am undeniably and proudly from Brooklyn, NY,  not the "new" Brooklyn, but the 80’s, 90’s Brooklyn…. if you know what I’m talking about. An inner city kid who grew up at the height of New York City crack epedemic, AIDS epidemic heightened crime rates of gun violence, homocide, theft and poverty. All to which  changed the lives of children, families and further crippled the African American and Latino communities. These were the norms of inner city life at the time of me being introduced to the world.

The atrocities at the time were unforgiving and took many in it's path. My parents provided me and my siblings with the very best they could, given what they knew and what was available to them, their efforts are commendable for such a time and place to raise children.  My parents raised us in the church and we were a very active family involved within that community. It  was a consistent staple and means of support in our lives, but my parents were no strangers to the gloom of the 80's and 90's, and for nearly two decades they had struggles of their own and the impact of domestic violence and verbal abuse within the marriage led to divorce. This was the very best thing they did, my mother then became everything she needed to be to raise us into who we are now.

I know it is with purpose that I was born in such a time to be witness to it all, and with gratitude and love, I give thanks. Now at  40 I know my life work is to bring a sense of peace, healing, compassion, encouragement, understanding, support and great love into the many gifts given to me by the creator. I am creative, energetically sensitive, compassionate with great depth of feeling that I then interpret into physical form which looks like helping others and taking care of others, creating things with my hands, movement and a keen awareness of harmoniously organizing and bringing together the aesthetics and logistics of literally anything. My great love is health & wellness in it's vast nature and forms and service.

As early as I could remember, I’ve had a natural affinity for movement; while I was never a fan or would try my hand at competitive sports, fluid movement was the one thing that bought me alive and felt very natural to me.  I clearly remember like yesterday as a young girl dancing in front of the stereo at home to my favorite song "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club remembering how passionate my spirit felt about moving....that feeling, was riveting. Reflecting, it has been an underlying theme throughout  my life showing up in the form of dance as a child, track and field as a pre-teen and later as a young adult a continuous quest in seeking out fitness, dance and any movement experiences.

My love for dance took form through a three-year commitment to Salsa level 1 and 2 under the instruction of Mamboo D in NYC and Yoga Flow Vinyasa Instruction provided through sources such as 24Hour Fitness NYC, Move with Grace in Brooklyn, NY and Yoga to the People NYC. I have a B.A in Psychology with 10 plus years in the non profit sector servicing both children and adults with an array of disabilities. During that portion of my life I spent countless hours passionately teaching, coordinating, supervising, planning, advocating and helping people access a life of quality in spite of their developmental challenges. I have the greatest of memories and this experience has shaped the person centered approach that take in all that I do.

I am a Certified AFAA Group X Instructor, Certified FXP Hula Hoop Instructor, Certified Shape Up NYC Instructor having taught Total Body Conditioning in various community based settings. I've worked with Adults ages 18-60 and senior citizens ages 75-80 plus. I am currently a Fitness Instructor through start-up Get Right Fitness inc. instructing children between the ages of 18 months to 7 years old in developing body awareness, building confidence, coordination and strength through these early developmental stages.

I am passionate about the health from a holistic perspective, spiritual, mental and physical and whole heartily believe that with all of our resources we should all experience good health and so I share all that I know with others. What keeps me going is sharing my gifts with others doing good work in the world, community, wellness, health, fitness and the provision of great service. I believe I’m here to inspire and assist others in living a life that reflects their best health. Inspiring people towards their greater selves motivating and encouraging them to ignite and sustain their inner fire, personal power and core strength through the trans formative tool of coaching through the modules of fitness, nutrition and mind, body, spirit and interior space wellness.
